- Wild Sicily
- Coast To Coast
- Deep Sicily
- Secret Sicily
- Madonie Mountains
- A Taste Of Sicily
A sweeping, soul-stirring trail that carries you through the greenest, wildest heart of Sicily – from the northern slopes of the Madonie Mountains near Cefalù, across the deep, wooded backbone of the Nebrodi, and all the way to the smoking flanks of Mount Etna, one of the most active volcanoes on earth.
-
Day 1: Arrival
Non-riding dayYour Sicilian chapter begins at Casa Il Bosco, a lovingly restored nineteenth-century country house tucked deep within the wild folds of the Madonie Park. The views stretch across the island’s northern coastline to the distant Aeolian Islands – a breathtaking welcome to the week ahead. You’ll settle in, soak up the tranquillity of the countryside, and enjoy a dinner crafted from local produce before turning in for the night.
-
Day 2: Geraci Siculo
6 hours in the saddleThe rhythm of the ride settles in quickly this morning as you meet your horse after breakfast and set out from Casa Il Bosco at around 8.30am. The trail leads you straight into dense Mediterranean vegetation, where the scent of wild herbs hangs in the air and glimpses of the Tyrrhenian Sea shimmer through the trees.
By late morning, you will skirt the edges of Castelbuono before continuing on to a peaceful picnic spot beside an old water mill. Time here invites you to slow down, rest your legs, and soak in the quiet beauty of the Sicilian countryside.
The afternoon ride carries you higher, winding through a striking cork oak forest as the landscape begins to shift. Your destination is Geraci Siculo – a captivating medieval village perched high in the mountains, crowned by the ruins of a once-mighty castle. This historic stronghold was the seat of the powerful Ventimiglia Barons, and its presence still defines the skyline today.
Dinner and overnight await at Hotel Donna Vi, where a comfortable room and spa facilities offer a welcome chance to unwind after a full day in the saddle.
-
Day 3: Monte Soprano
7 hours in the saddleThe morning begins with an 8.30am departure, following ancient pathways through rolling farmland. You’ll cross the point where the provinces of Palermo, Enna and Messina meet, climbing to around 1,200 metres before passing below the sweeping blades of a hilltop wind farm. A picnic lunch is enjoyed deep within the Sambughetti–Campanito reserve. The afternoon brings you across the territories of Nicosia and Cerami before arriving at Agriturismo Monte Soprano – a working farm with a pool set on the slopes of the Nebrodi Mountains. Dinner and overnight here.
-
Day 4: Villa Miraglia
7 hours in the saddleToday carries you into the very heart of the Nebrodi Natural Park. You’ll follow the legendary Dorsale – a 100-kilometre mountain ridge track that threads through high pastures and deep forests. Views spill north over the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Aeolian Islands, and south across Sicily’s inland provinces, with Mount Etna rising commandingly on the horizon. Riding through the beech woods of San Fratello, you may spot the hardy native sanfratellani horses grazing freely. A picnic lunch beneath ancient trees is followed by an afternoon ride to Relais Villa Miraglia, where dinner showcases Nebrodi specialities.
-
Day 5: Dorsale Pathway
8 hours in the saddleThe landscape opens wide this morning as you continue along the renowned Dorsale pathway, riding through a rich tapestry of mountains, woodlands, and high-altitude lakes. This is a day defined by ever-changing scenery, where each turn in the trail reveals another layer of Sicily’s wild beauty.
Your first landmark is Lake Maulazzo, sitting quietly beneath Monte Soro – the highest peak in the Nebrodi Mountains at 1,847 metres. Towering beech forests cloak its slopes, creating a cool, tranquil atmosphere that feels worlds away from the coast.
The ride continues on to Lake Biviere di Cesarò, a serene and important resting place for migrating birds. The stillness here is striking, broken only by birdsong and the gentle rhythm of hooves as you pass through this protected landscape.
From here, the trail begins its gradual descent out of the Nebrodi Mountains, following panoramic pathways with sweeping views towards Mount Etna. The silhouette of Europe’s most active volcano grows ever more prominent as the terrain softens into open countryside.
By afternoon, you arrive at La Fucina di Vulcano, where a welcoming pool and uninterrupted views across Etna’s western flank set the tone for a relaxing evening. Dinner is served here, followed by a comfortable overnight stay.
-
Day 6: Chalet Clan dei Ragazzi
6.5 hours in the saddleThis morning, you leave La Fucina di Vulcano at around 8.30am and begin your ascent of Mount Etna’s western slopes. The trail climbs steadily towards the famed Pista Altomontana, carrying you through forests of beech and towering conifers as the air cools and the landscape shifts once more.
Soon, the terrain transforms. You will cross ancient lava flows – stark, sculptural reminders of Etna’s power – with sweeping views opening out across the Nebrodi Mountains and, on clear days, all the way to Sicily’s eastern coastline.
A packed lunch awaits at a rustic mountain refuge tucked deep within Etna’s woodland. Time here offers a quiet pause before the ride continues through landscapes that feel almost otherworldly – a striking contrast of forest, volcanic rock, and open sky.
By late afternoon, you arrive at Chalet Clan dei Ragazzi, set within a majestic forest of larix pines. Dinner is served here, followed by an overnight stay in this peaceful alpine setting.
-
Day 7: Feudo Magazzeni
6 hours in the saddleSetting off around 8.30am, the day’s route varies with the season and conditions. You may climb higher into Etna’s pine and beech forests to reach the site of the mountain’s last major lateral eruption in 2002. You’ll skirt the 2002 craters, riding through a lunar-like landscape before continuing through fragrant forests of birch, beech and larix pines to the Sartorius craters, born from the 1865 eruption. After a picnic lunch, the trail winds down Etna’s north-eastern slopes to Feudo Magazzeni – a beautifully restored historic property set within hazelnut groves near Sant’Alfio. Dinner and overnight.
-
Day 8: Departure
Non-riding dayAfter breakfast, you’ll be transferred to the airport – hearts full, legs happily tired, and Sicily forever imprinted on your soul.
Transfer information
Coast to Coast and A Taste of Sicily: day 1 pick-up and day 8 drop-off at Palermo (airport or railway station)
Wild Sicily and Deep Sicily: day 1 pick-up at Palermo (airport or railway station) and day 8 drop-off at Catania (airport, railway station or hotel).
We recommend flying into Palermo one or two days before your ride begins so that you can recover from any jet lag and make the most of this fabulous city and its many nearby attractions. See your trip prep kit for recommendations.
If flying in on day 1, please ensure your flight arrives between 11am and 5pm.
Departing flights on day 8 must also fall between 11am and 5pm.
Please note
Due to the constraints of the support vehicle and the need to carry luggage up and down stairs at many accommodation sites, each person must not bring more than 1 medium-sized suitcase and 1 carry-bag or backpack. Numerous luggage storage facilities are available in Palermo if you have extra items not needed for the ride.
Accommodation
A Taste of Sicily: 6 nights at your hosts’ base, Casa Il Bosco, a charming, restored 19th century country house immersed in the wild countryside of Madonie Regional National Park, with breathtaking views of Sicily’s north coast and the Aeolian Islands. There are six double rooms; four with ensuites, and two with a shared bathroom. There is also 1 night in a simple but comfortable mountain lodge.
Deep Sicily, Wild Sicily & Coast to Coast: after 1 night at Casa Il Bosco (above), you will stay in a variety of clean and comfortable 2 and 3 star accommodations, including farmhouses, hamlets, and small rural hotels. Each has its own charm and offers authentic opportunities to meet the locals.
At some places, you’ll need to share a bathroom, including those who have purchased the single supplement. Oh, and it’s Europe, so be prepared to stay in modest-sized single beds in a twin-share room.
*There are 2x single supplements are available per departure, and these will be assigned on a first come, first served basis.
Food
Sicily’s food culture is rich, vibrant and deeply rooted in local tradition. Breakfasts tend to be sweet — think homemade jams, fruit cake, croissants and yoghurt — with a few savoury options available. Picnic lunches feature fresh salads, cheeses, cured meats, olives and crusty bread, while evenings bring generous four-course meals made from local, home-grown ingredients. Guests with gluten intolerances are welcome, though options may be more limited given Italy’s wheat-based cuisine.

Not sure what your riding level is? Watch our videos to see all our levels.
Beginner
Reasonably confident riding a horse at a walk, a rising trot, and learning to canter.
Intermediate
Confident and in control riding at all paces outside an arena, but not riding regularly. Comfortable and competent using aids {the language of your leg, seat and hands} to communicate with your horse.
Strong Intermediate
An intermediate rider who is currently riding regularly outside of an arena and is fit enough to ride for at least six hours per day. Strong intermediate riders are comfortable and competent in all three gaits; able to post or sit to the trot; have an independent seat while cantering (don’t hold onto the saddle); and can pick up the correct canter lead. They can also navigate more complex terrain, including asking a horse to sidestep and jump over a small obstacle.
Advanced
A frequent rider who is very fit, comfortable in the saddle for at least six hours per day, and has an independent seat and soft hands. Advanced riders are confident on a forward-moving horse at all paces over rough and variable ground on open terrain. They can ride over small jumps and know the techniques used to collect a horse
