The Okavango Delta Ride

The Ride of a Lifetime in the Okavango Delta

Riding in the Okavango Delta is legendary – a white-knuckle, water-splashed, wildlife-rich adventure through one of Africa’s last untouched wildernesses. With exceptional horses, luxurious camps and mile after mile of floodplains made for cantering, it’s the kind of safari you’ll brag about for the rest of your life.

Trip Highlights

  • Galloping through the Delta’s famous water meadows

  • Being joined by a family of elephants as you pause to let the horses drink from a pond

  • Weaving through a herd – or should we say a tower – of curious giraffes

  • Wading through lush green malapos that lead you from island to island

  • Breathing in the heady scent of dusty rain as a storm brews on the horizon
  • Sinking into a chair at day’s end, drink in hand, watching the blood-red sun drop into the bruised African sky

Itinerary

Please note, these are suggested itineraries only and subject to change at the discretion of your guides due to weather and other influencing factors. Please keep in mind that water levels in the Okavango Delta change throughout the year, peaking around July–September (if there’s been a good wet season in Angola, where the floods travel from). This affects both riding and off-horse activities, so the following itineraries should be used as a guide only.

  • 5 Night Itinerary
  • 7 Night Itinerary
  • 10 Night Itinerary

Globetrotting tip: if your time and budget allow, go for the 7-night safari – five nights just isn’t enough to really feel the full magic of the Okavango Delta!

  • 5 Night Itinerary

A 5-night itinerary is the ideal introduction to the Delta, giving you time to settle into the rhythm of Kujwana Camp – a wild, watery paradise in the heart of the Okavango Delta.

You’ll spend your days exploring on horseback, stopping for picnic lunches, drifting through channels in mokoros, walking, game driving and, when the water allows, powering across the floodplains by boat. There’s also the chance to spend two unforgettable nights at the fly-camp – a truly adventurous twist that elevates this safari to something extraordinary.

  • Day 1: Arrival & Orientation Ride

1.5 to 2 hours in the saddle

You’ll be met at Maun Airport, then whisked straight into Kujwana Camp by your chosen transfer method – a 20-minute helicopter hop, or flown by light aircraft to the nearest airstrip, followed by around an hour’s journey to camp by vehicle or boat (water permitting).

Once in camp, you’ll have time to settle into your spacious tent before lunch or afternoon tea and a relaxed introductory briefing. Then it’s time to meet your horse on an orientation ride of 1.5–2 hours, before gathering with your guides and fellow guests for dinner in the beautiful raised dining area.

  • Day 2: Xudum

3 to 5 hours in the saddle

You’ll wake to a gentle knock and a tray of tea or coffee to enjoy in bed as the bush comes alive around you. After breakfast, you’ll set out for a morning ride in the Xudum area, wading through lush green molapos from island to island (water levels dependent), startling a shy reedbuck from its hiding place or watching elephants, buffalo and zebra drift through the open plains.

You’ll return to camp for lunch, followed by a siesta or a refreshing swim. In the late afternoon, you’ll slip into a mokoro for a peaceful glide along the river (water levels dependent), soaking up the stillness and the extraordinary colours of the Delta as the sun sinks low on the horizon.

  • Day 3: Fly Camp

5 to 6 hours in the saddle

You’ll spend the day on horseback, covering around 30 km from Kujwana Camp as you make your way towards the fly-camp. The route leads you across open floodplains and scattered islands into the Qwaapu river system, where wildlife is plentiful. A picnic lunch is served on a shady island, followed by a siesta on camp beds – perhaps even a swim – before heading out for another two hours’ riding in the afternoon.

You’ll arrive at the fly-camp at sunset, greeted with a refreshing drink and sweeping views over the floodplain. Luxurious tents with proper beds, hot ensuite showers and a spacious mess tent with sofas and a small library await you. Drift off to sleep to the comforting sound of your horse munching its hay on the picket line.

  • Day 4: Game Drive & Afternoon Ride

3 to 4 hours in the saddle

To give your horse a well-earned rest, you’ll spend the morning on a game drive that includes a bush walk and some tracking. Drives are the ideal opportunity to seek out predators – from the endangered African wild dog to the many leopards that call this area home.

After lunch and a siesta (or a few camp games), you’ll head out for an afternoon ride exploring the eastern side of the concession. This route takes you through varied game areas and across multiple hippo channels in a wonderfully remote corner of the Delta.

  • Day 5: Return to Kujwana Camp

5 to 6 hours in the saddle

A full days ride back to camp picnicing at a different spot and completing the journey you set out on two days before. A chance to swim your horse back into Kujwana Camp if water levels permit. A final evening dinner with a few tales from your safari to tell!

  • Day 6: Departure

2 hours in the saddle (only if transfer time allows)

If time allows, you’ll enjoy one last early-morning game ride before returning to camp for brunch and a fond farewell.

You’ll then return to Maun via your chosen transfer option.

  • Non-Riders

We’re not all about riding – non-riding guests have an unforgettable time in the Okavango Delta too.

Mokoro glides, speedboat outings, game drives and bush walks are all on offer (water levels dependent for some activities), so there’s no shortage of adventure. Non-riders join the group for picnic lunches, afternoon activities, bush dinners, fly-camps and sleep-outs, so mixed groups still spend plenty of quality time together.

  • 7 Night Itinerary

A 7-night itinerary gives you the chance to truly sink into the magic of the Delta.

From Kujwana Camp – a wild, watery haven at the heart of the Okavango – you’ll spend your days riding across pristine landscapes, stopping for picnic lunches, drifting through channels in mokoros, walking, game driving and, when the water allows, skimming across the plains by powerboat.

There’s also the option to spend two unforgettable nights at the fly-camp, adding a generous dash of adventure to an already extraordinary safari.

After breakfast, you’ll set out for a morning ride in the Xudum area, wading through lush green molapos from island to island (water levels dependent), startling a shy reedbuck from its hiding place or watching elephants, buffalo and zebra drift through the open plains.

You’ll spend a full day riding back to Kujwana Camp, stopping for a picnic in a new spot as you complete the loop you began two days earlier. The journey leads you through a chain of rain pans – a striking contrast to the open floodplains – and then into mopane forests and acacia woodlands, where elephant, kudu and giraffe find plenty to browse. Breeding herds often shelter in the thicker forest, and if the pans are holding water, you may also encounter zebra, wildebeest and buffalo.

If the levels are right, you’ll have the unforgettable chance to swim your horse back into camp.

  • Day 6: Bush Dinner

3 to 4 hours in the saddle

You’ll set out on a morning ride, with the option to try a new horse – perhaps one of our beautiful homebreds, a sure-footed Boerperd or one of our spirited, fun-loving Arabs. After a long, relaxed lunch and a rest, you’ll head out by vehicle for a magical bush dinner, followed by a night drive back to camp. It’s the perfect opportunity to spot nocturnal wildlife and enjoy some stargazing under the Delta’s velvet sky.

  • Day 7: Kujwana Camp

3 to 5 hours in the saddle

You’ll head out on a morning ride in search of any game that has managed to stay hidden throughout the week, followed by a barbecue lunch by the pool, hosted – and cooked – by your guide. After a siesta, you can choose an afternoon activity or simply settle into a shady spot with a good book and soak up the views. In the evening, you’ll gather for a final dinner and share a few favourite stories from your safari.

  • Day 8: Departure

2 hours in the saddle (only if transfer time allows)

If time allows, you’ll enjoy one last early-morning game ride before returning to camp for brunch and a fond farewell.

You’ll then return to Maun via your chosen transfer option.

Non-riders join the group for picnic lunches, afternoon activities, bush dinners, fly-camps and sleep-outs, so mixed groups still spend plenty of quality time together.

  • 10 Night Itinerary

A 10-night itinerary is the ultimate way to truly understand the rhythms and secrets of the Delta.

From Kujwana Camp – a wild, water-laced haven in the heart of the Okavango – you’ll explore on horseback, pause for picnic lunches, drift through channels in mokoros, enjoy a bush dinner, stretch your legs on walks, head out on game drives and, when water levels allow, skim across the plains by powerboat.

You’ll also have the chance to spend two unforgettable nights at the fly-camp – a wonderfully adventurous twist – plus an additional night on the sleep-out platforms, falling asleep to the sounds of the Delta under a sky full of stars.

  • Day 1: Arrival & Orientation Ride

  • Day 8: Sleep-Out Platforms

3 to 5 hours in the saddle

You’ll begin the day with a morning ride east of Kujwana Camp, weaving through shady rain pans and thick riverine forest – perfect country for tracking a breeding herd of elephants. After a snack beside a hippo-filled pool, you’ll continue into more open terrain, where you may catch sight of buffalo moving across the plains.

In the evening, you’ll enjoy an early dinner in camp before heading out on a night drive to the sleep-out platforms. There, you’ll drift off beneath a canopy of stars, accompanied by the soft, familiar calls of the little pearl-spotted owls perched in the branches above.

  • Day 9: Return to Kujwana Camp

    2 hours in the saddle

You’ll wake high in the trees on your platform to a spectacular sunrise over the Qwaapu area, watching game wander quietly across the floodplain below. After a bush breakfast, you’ll make your way back to Kujwana Camp with a combination of game drive and walk.

In the late afternoon, you’ll head out for a gentle two-hour ride, finishing with sunset drinks on one of the floodplains – a gorgeous way to round off an active day.

  • Day 10: Qwaapu River

3 to 4 hours in the saddle

You’ll spend your final full morning on a ride heading east towards Beacon and Lion Island – two expansive islands separated from Kujwana by the Qwaapu River. When the floodwaters are in, this area offers brilliant opportunities for splashy, joy-filled canters.

In the afternoon, you’ll set out on a bird walk, with the chance to learn more about the traditional uses of the plants and trees that shape this remarkable landscape.

  • Day 11: Departure

Accommodation

Kujwana Camp

This permanent camp sits on an island in the Xudum River in the southwestern Okavango Delta, tucked into quiet woodland alive with birdsong. With just six rooms, it’s a small, exclusive camp offering a true wilderness experience with a touch of wild luxury – think vervet monkeys dropping by and elephants grazing on marula outside your tent. Each suite has a veranda overlooking the clear Delta waters, where elephants wallow and kingfishers perch in the riverine trees. At night, you’ll fall asleep to hippos grazing, and each morning the sunrise will bathe your room in warm, golden light.

Fly Camp

A stay at the fly-camp is often the highlight of the safari, giving you access to remote areas far beyond Kujwana’s daily range. It captures the classic spirit of old-style safari – travelling through true wilderness and arriving to find comfortable tents, hot ensuite showers and a cosy mess tent with sofas and a small library. At night, you’ll fall asleep to the soft sound of your horse munching hay nearby – unforgettable.

Not sure what your riding level is? Watch our videos to see all our levels.

Beginner

Reasonably confident riding a horse at a walk, a rising trot, and learning to canter.

Watch video

Intermediate

Confident and in control riding at all paces outside an arena, but not riding regularly. Comfortable and competent using aids {the language of your leg, seat and hands} to communicate with your horse.

Strong Intermediate

An intermediate rider who is currently riding regularly outside of an arena and is fit enough to ride for at least six hours per day. Strong intermediate riders are comfortable and competent in all three gaits; able to post or sit to the trot; have an independent seat while cantering (don’t hold onto the saddle); and can pick up the correct canter lead. They can also navigate more complex terrain, including asking a horse to sidestep and jump over a small obstacle.

Watch video

Advanced

A frequent rider who is very fit, comfortable in the saddle for at least six hours per day, and has an independent seat and soft hands. Advanced riders are confident on a forward-moving horse at all paces over rough and variable ground on open terrain. They can ride over small jumps and know the techniques used to collect a horse
