Itinerary

Please note, these are suggested itineraries only and subject to change due to weather and other influencing factors. Changes will always be communicated clearly, and more often than not, the result of something even more amazing happening that you won’t want to miss!

  • Tuscan Trail
  • Tuscan Escape
  • Full Moon Trail

A 7 day, 6 night ride for those who are saddle fit, intermediate to advanced riders and want to ride further afield. There’s plenty of trotting and cantering, some serious mileage, incredibly varied terrain, saddlebag picnics, swimming with the horses and more. Oh, and you’re of course staying in your own luxury villa – pinch me now!

  • Day 1: Arrival & Orientation Ride

    1 hour in the saddle

Welcome to Tuscany, globetrotters! Today you’ll make your way to your hosts’ property, arriving between 1:30-2:30pm (November to mid-March) or 3-4pm (late March to October). Your hosts, Patrick and Gio, will be there to greet you and show you to your apartment, where you can freshen up before heading to the Selleria (tack room). Here you’ll have a welcome drink, chat about the week’s program and, of course, meet the herd! If there’s time, you’ll saddle up for a short ride around the property (please note, at least 15mins of this will be getting acquainted with your horse in the round pen, before embarking on a 40min-1hr ride around the estate to further familiarise yourself with your horse and make any changes necessary).

Dinner will be shared at the Farmhouse, with its stunning interiors alluding to your hosts’ past lives running a prosperous antiques store. The whole property oozes quality, elegance and timelessness. The table will be groaning with fresh Tuscan produce: think wild boar ragu, charcuterie, local cheeses, olives from the property, salads galore and the rustic Tuscan pasta, pici, which hugs its rich sauce like a doting nonna. Delicious local wines complete the welcome.

Finally, you’ll retire to your plush apartment to catch some Zs.

  • Day 2: Tenuto Fontina

5 to 6 hours in the saddle

Waking up to the realisation that this incredible holiday is actually your reality, not a dream, you’ll tuck into a lavish breakfast (let’s be honest: everything about this trip is lavish!), pack your saddlebags, don your riding gear and mount up. Today’s ride is a varied and exhilarating 25 kilometre journey to Tenuto Fontina, a winery near the stunningly beautiful Lago dell’Accessa. There will be plenty of trots and canters, and the route can be tailored to the group’s ability and desires.

Halfway along, you’ll pause to devour a splendid picnic lunch and loll around in hammocks sipping something refreshing. You’ll then ride on to Tenuto Fontina, where the horses will spend the night, in time for a sunset aperitivo. Finally, you’ll be driven back to the ranch for another feast in the dining room and some me-time in your apartment.

  • Day 3: Lago dell’Accesa

5 to 6 hours in the saddle

This morning you’ll be driven back to the horses via a local bar (the centre of Italian social life!) where you’ll sample the typical Tuscan breakfast: a capuccino or espresso and a cornetto (Italy’s answer to the croissant). Don’t forget your swimsuit – today you’re in for a beautiful mini-holiday at Lago dell’Accesa, Maremma’s answer to the Maldives. This small lake surrounded by oak trees and vineyards is fed by underground springs, resulting in crystalline waters that are a steady 20°C (68°F) year-round. With no particular destination and all day to explore, you’ll wander along the lake shore and surrounds, where significant Etruscan ruins await your discovery, before jumping into the inviting waters – maybe even with your horse!

Lunch will be waiting at a nearby farm with an amazing view over the countryside, and can extend all afternoon while you doze, read, or splash about. The only goal today is a feeling of bliss and peace, and perhaps an appreciation of the grace and power of a swimming horse.

Evening brings a cracking dinner party in the dining room, or out on the terrace if the mood takes you. Cocktails, twinkling lights, the scent of oranges, and a wonderful day to reflect upon.

  • Day 4: To the Beach

4 to 5 hours in the saddle

Federico is your host this morning – a true buttero, one of the Maremma region’s very own cowboys. Famed for their horsemanship and skills with the long-horned Maremmana cattle, the butteri are a well-known and greatly respected symbol of Maremma. Federico backs and starts all the horses at the ranch, and will offer you a demonstration, answer your questions and tell some wonderful stories while you sip your morning coffee and munch cornetti.

When you’ve filled up on Federico’s wisdom, you’ll be driven to the coast, where Gio and Patrick keep a second string of horses. Here you’ll have a memorable lunch made by Mamma Doriana, who welcomes guests into her kitchen as she produces reams and reams of stellar pasta, and some beautiful homespun wisdom, too. Then it’s time to mount up and hit the beach (or, from June, to September, the gorgeous national park just up the hill – don’t worry, you’ll still be able to swim in the sea!). Pine forests, sandy canters, lookouts, siestas… the day is yours to enjoy as you please.

  • Day 5: Lago dell’Accessa

5 to 8 hours in the saddle

Avanti, Globetrotters, avanti! Onwards to another day in paradise! This morning you’ll be driven back to Tenuto Fontina to ride the horses home from Lago dell’Accessa along a totally different route, covering around 25 to 30 kilometres. This can be a fast-paced and thrilling ride of 5 to 6 hours, or a more leisurely ride of 7 to 8 hours, with another hilltop viewpoint, hammock siesta, and gluttonous picnic to break the day up. There’s a wonderful mix of open country, dense pine forest, technical riding, and freedom to pick up the pace and fly.

For dinner, a guest chef will drop in to dazzle you with her take on Tuscany’s magnificent cuisine.

  • Day 6: Vetalonia

5 to 6 hours in the saddle

Your last riding day (sigh) brings the novel experience of riding the horses into town! Into a stunning medieval citadel, in fact. The hills around the ranch are littered with these honey-toned gems of history and architecture, including Vetalonia, a former Etruscan capital where you can see ancient ruins and even ride on a street paved 2,500 years ago; Tirli, with its stunning views over the Tuscan archipelago; and Caldana, home to Maremma’s oldest and most important medieval church. You’ll ride through dense and fragrant forests, over significant Etruscan ruins, through fields of wildflowers and olive groves, and clip-clop along ancient cobbled streets, stone staircases and narrow alleyways with flags and laundry fluttering in the breeze. You’ll feel like you’re in a costume drama: ‘Lower the drawbridge and sound the horns, the globetrotters have arrived!’

After a long table lunch in your chosen village, you’ll wind your way home via any number of scenic trails, taking as long as you please to return to the ranch.

Though dinner can be enjoyed in your apartment tonight, we recommend rallying the troops for a drive to a restaurant in town (dinner is included in the ride price, rest assured), for a taste of the nightlife in this gorgeous region.

  • Day 7: Departure

    Non-riding day

After one final delicious breakfast, you’ll check out of your room by 10am, saying a fond farewell to this heavenly place and its delightful custodians.

  • Non-riders

This is the perfect ride for non-riders to join as there is so much for them to do and see in the area at their leisure. The hosts, Gio and Patrick, will be able to share their recommendations and offer suggestions as to how to fill each day – you can do as much or as little as you’d like!

Please note: Non-riders MUST have their own rental car. The farm is approximately 20mins from a local town so having your own transportation is essential.

A 5 day, 4 night fully customisable itinerary where riders of all levels can have the experience that their soul needs – and be back in time for cocktail hour! This itinerary is perfect if you’re craving down-time as much as saddle time, and is suitable for non-riders as well.

  • Day 1: Arrival & Orientation Ride

    1 hour in the saddle

Welcome to Tuscany, globetrotters! Today you’ll make your way to your hosts’ ranch, arriving between 1:30-2:30pm (November to mid-March) or 3-4pm (late March to October). Your hosts Patrick and Gio will be there to greet you and show you to your apartment, where you can freshen up before heading to the Selleria (tack room). Delicious local wines complete the welcome.

Finally, you’ll retire to your plush apartment to catch some Zs.

  • Day 2: Medieval Hilltop

3 to 5 hours in the saddle

Waking up to the realisation that this incredible getaway is actually your reality, not a dream, you’ll tuck into a lavish breakfast (let’s be honest: everything about this trip is lavish!), then head to the stables and mount up for a ride to a film set-worthy medieval hilltop town. Your hosts have hand-cut their own trails through the forests surrounding the ranch, and there are routes to suit everyone from beginners to speed demons. By the time the horses’ hooves strike the cobblestones, you’ll have worked up an appetite for the huge lunch that awaits you in the town square.

Bellies full of pasta, wine and gelato, you’ll ride back to the ranch via totally different trails, the horses’ surefootedness coming to the fore on the steep descent. There’ll be ample opportunity for some me-time in your apartment before sitting down to another exquisite evening meal.

  • Day 3: Ride at leisure

2 to 6 hours in the saddle

Today you can spend as little or as much time as you please riding through the olive fields, meadows, pine forests and vineyards around the glorious estate and beyond. Perhaps you’ll want to stay in the saddle until dusk, or perhaps just an hour or two, with the rest of the day devoted solely to relaxation (or heading out to see some of the countless local attractions). Either way, the highlight is a seriously next-level hilltop picnic complete with hammocks, hot drinks, iced drinks, silverware, porcelain, sumptuous snacking, and of course a view to die for.

Come evening, you’ll sit back and watch the sunset, aperitivo in hand, before glamming up for a fabulous dinner party at the farmhouse.

  • Day 4: Buriano

3 to 5 hours in the saddle

Another glorious day in paradise awaits! After breakfast you’ll set off on a longer ride, choosing between the enchanting medieval hilltop towns of trans Buriano or trans Tirli, each steeped in rich history and timeless charm. The trail will test your endurance with its challenging, undulating paths, but every effort is rewarded with breathtaking vistas as you crest the hills.

For lunch, you’ll savor a delightful picnic along the trail or relax at a cozy local restaurant, soaking in the ambiance of the countryside. Afterward, indulge in a sun-kissed siesta, allowing the warmth of the afternoon to rejuvenate your spirit before you embark on a new route back home.

As the day draws to a close, you’ll return to the welcoming embrace of the farmhouse, where a sumptuous dinner awaits. Sip on exquisite local wines and relish the heartfelt hospitality of your hosts, making every moment of this day a cherished memory.

  • Day 5: Departure

    Non-riding day

After one final delicious breakfast, you’ll check out of your room by 10am, saying a wistful farewell to your horse, your hosts and this patch of paradise.

A 4 day, 3 night ride run over the summer months, which sees you riding early in the morning or late in the day to escape the tabasco-hot summer heat. It’s a relaxed itinerary with plenty of time out of the saddle to indulge in La Dolce Vita.

NB: For this particular itinerary, all guests are required to have their own transportation (hire car) as almost every meal is off-site and logistical support is not provided.

  • Day 1: Arrival & Orientation Ride

    1.5 hours in the saddle

Welcome to Tuscany, one of our favourite places in the world! You’ll need to arrive at your hosts’ property between 3-4pm today where you’ll have time to settle into your accommodations before embarking on a short but thrilling trail ride to Vetulonia, an ancient Etruscan town. You’ll stop for a sunset aperitivo with delivious finger food, before returning to the ranch where the horses will bed down for the evening. You’re heading offsite for a delightful dinner experience at Osteria 1935 in Giuncarico tonight globetrotters, where you’ll be able to savour the Tuscan flavours and hospitality.

  • Day 2: Castiglione della Pescaia

6 to 7 hours in the saddle

Waking up in your luxurious surroundings, you’ll start your day with a traditional Italian breakfast (caffe & cornetto) in the charming clubhouse before embarking on an exhilarating 2.5-hour trail ride through diverse Tuscan landscapes. Enjoy rolling estates, vineyards, and olive fields, with opportunities for some lively canters. Afterward, relax and unwind on the beautiful beaches of Castiglione della Pescaia, with a delicious lunch served seaside.

This evening will be a ride like no other, as you experience the magic of a full-moon trail (approx 5hrs riding) followed by a memorable dinner under the stars and a cozy candlelight nightcap back at the accommodation. You won’t return home before 1am, the sights and sounds of Tuscany under a full moon will be so intoxicating, so please make sure you are well rested the previous evening.

  • Day 3: Le Mortelle

    1.5 hours in the saddle

A leisurely morning after your late night, you’ll wake to the smell of fresh pastries delivered to your apartment. At around 11.30am you’ll head out to explore the noble estate of Le Mortelle. Enjoy a tour of their state-of-the-art cellars and a delightful wine-tasting experience, followed by an al-fresco lunch. Later this afternoon after a much-needed siesta, you’ll head out on one final trail ride (approx 1.5hrs), totally immersed in nature with some final thrilling canters. In the evening, toast to another remarkable day with an Aperol Spritz sundowner, followed by a sumptuous four-course dinner at Ai Convento in Scarlino.

  • Day 4: Departure

    Non-riding day

Savour one last breakfast treat of pastries in your luxurious apartment, before you check out at 10am, taking with you cherished memories of your unforgettable equestrian adventure. Be sure to come back next time for longer to explore more of this magical region!

Transfer information

For those coming from Europe or the UK, we recommend flying into Pisa, a 1.5-hour drive from your hosts’ ranch. For those coming from further afield, we recommend flying into Rome Fiumicino Airport, a 2.5-hour drive from the ranch.

Transfers to and from the ranch are not included in the ride price. We strongly recommend hiring a car and self-driving (this is essential for the Full Moon Trail) so that you can explore more of Tuscany in your free time. Alternatively, you can book transfers to and from the ranch with Transfer Toscana. There are also several local car rental companies who offer a delivery/pick up service to the ranch.

On the final morning, you’ll need to check out of your rooms by 10am, but you’re welcome to spend a leisurely morning at the ranch until 12 midday if you wish, so if you’re flying home this day, we suggest booking an evening flight.

Please note

If flying in on day 1, please ensure your flight arrives early enough to give yourself time to collect your luggage, clear customs and make your way to the ranch before the ride begins:
November through to mid-March: first ride at 2:30pm.
Late March to October:
first ride at 4pm.

Accommodation

Three stylish, tasteful and luxurious apartments occupying a glorious traditional old Tuscan farmhouse. There is one three-bed, one two-bed, and one single bedroom apartment, all equally charming, and all studded with sumptuous furnishings and exceptional artwork. The apartments have their own kitchens, laundry facilities and rain showers, plus WiFi, a swimming pool, and a garden terrace for outside cocktails and entertaining. All of the beds are king sized, so please note twin share is not an option – if you share a room, you’ll share a bed!

Food

Food is a highlight of any Italian adventure and this ride absolutely delivers. Each day you’ll feast on fresh Tuscan produce — wild boar ragù, local cheeses, charcuterie, olives from the property, abundant salads and rustic pici pasta that clings to its sauce like a doting nonna. Local wines flow freely and whether you’re dining at the ride base or out in town, you’ll never go hungry in Italy. All meals are prepared by local community members — farmers, home cooks and those seeking extra income — a beautiful way your stay supports the families who call this region home. Please note: while gluten-intolerant guests will be accommodated where possible, we do not recommend this ride for coeliacs due to the high risk of cross-contamination — it is Italy, after all.

Beginner

Reasonably confident riding a horse at a walk, a rising trot, and learning to canter.

Watch video

Intermediate

Confident and in control riding at all paces outside an arena, but not riding regularly. Comfortable and competent using aids {the language of your leg, seat and hands} to communicate with your horse.

Watch video

Strong Intermediate

An intermediate rider who is currently riding regularly outside of an arena and is fit enough to ride for at least six hours per day. Strong intermediate riders are comfortable and competent in all three gaits; able to post or sit to the trot; have an independent seat while cantering (don’t hold onto the saddle); and can pick up the correct canter lead. They can also navigate more complex terrain, including asking a horse to sidestep and jump over a small obstacle.

Advanced

A frequent rider who is very fit, comfortable in the saddle for at least six hours per day, and has an independent seat and soft hands. Advanced riders are confident on a forward-moving horse at all paces over rough and variable ground on open terrain. They can ride over small jumps and know the techniques used to collect a horse
