- Tuscan Trail
- Tuscan Escape
- Full Moon Trail
A 7 day, 6 night ride for those who are saddle fit, intermediate to advanced riders and want to ride further afield. There’s plenty of trotting and cantering, some serious mileage, incredibly varied terrain, saddlebag picnics, swimming with the horses and more. Oh, and you’re of course staying in your own luxury villa – pinch me now!
-
Day 1: Arrival & Orientation Ride
1 hour in the saddleWelcome to Tuscany, globetrotters! Today you’ll make your way to your hosts’ property, arriving between 1:30-2:30pm (November to mid-March) or 3-4pm (late March to October). Your hosts, Patrick and Gio, will be there to greet you and show you to your apartment, where you can freshen up before heading to the Selleria (tack room). Here you’ll have a welcome drink, chat about the week’s program and, of course, meet the herd! If there’s time, you’ll saddle up for a short ride around the property (please note, at least 15mins of this will be getting acquainted with your horse in the round pen, before embarking on a 40min-1hr ride around the estate to further familiarise yourself with your horse and make any changes necessary).
Dinner will be shared at the Farmhouse, with its stunning interiors alluding to your hosts’ past lives running a prosperous antiques store. The whole property oozes quality, elegance and timelessness. The table will be groaning with fresh Tuscan produce: think wild boar ragu, charcuterie, local cheeses, olives from the property, salads galore and the rustic Tuscan pasta, pici, which hugs its rich sauce like a doting nonna. Delicious local wines complete the welcome.
Finally, you’ll retire to your plush apartment to catch some Zs.
-
Day 2: Tenuto Fontina
5 to 6 hours in the saddleWaking up to the realisation that this incredible holiday is actually your reality, not a dream, you’ll tuck into a lavish breakfast (let’s be honest: everything about this trip is lavish!), pack your saddlebags, don your riding gear and mount up. Today’s ride is a varied and exhilarating 25 kilometre journey to Tenuto Fontina, a winery near the stunningly beautiful Lago dell’Accessa. There will be plenty of trots and canters, and the route can be tailored to the group’s ability and desires.
Halfway along, you’ll pause to devour a splendid picnic lunch and loll around in hammocks sipping something refreshing. You’ll then ride on to Tenuto Fontina, where the horses will spend the night, in time for a sunset aperitivo. Finally, you’ll be driven back to the ranch for another feast in the dining room and some me-time in your apartment.
-
Day 3: Lago dell’Accesa
5 to 6 hours in the saddleThis morning you’ll be driven back to the horses via a local bar (the centre of Italian social life!) where you’ll sample the typical Tuscan breakfast: a capuccino or espresso and a cornetto (Italy’s answer to the croissant). Don’t forget your swimsuit – today you’re in for a beautiful mini-holiday at Lago dell’Accesa, Maremma’s answer to the Maldives. This small lake surrounded by oak trees and vineyards is fed by underground springs, resulting in crystalline waters that are a steady 20°C (68°F) year-round. With no particular destination and all day to explore, you’ll wander along the lake shore and surrounds, where significant Etruscan ruins await your discovery, before jumping into the inviting waters – maybe even with your horse!
Lunch will be waiting at a nearby farm with an amazing view over the countryside, and can extend all afternoon while you doze, read, or splash about. The only goal today is a feeling of bliss and peace, and perhaps an appreciation of the grace and power of a swimming horse.
Evening brings a cracking dinner party in the dining room, or out on the terrace if the mood takes you. Cocktails, twinkling lights, the scent of oranges, and a wonderful day to reflect upon.
-
Day 4: To the Beach
4 to 5 hours in the saddleFederico is your host this morning – a true buttero, one of the Maremma region’s very own cowboys. Famed for their horsemanship and skills with the long-horned Maremmana cattle, the butteri are a well-known and greatly respected symbol of Maremma. Federico backs and starts all the horses at the ranch, and will offer you a demonstration, answer your questions and tell some wonderful stories while you sip your morning coffee and munch cornetti.
When you’ve filled up on Federico’s wisdom, you’ll be driven to the coast, where Gio and Patrick keep a second string of horses. Here you’ll have a memorable lunch made by Mamma Doriana, who welcomes guests into her kitchen as she produces reams and reams of stellar pasta, and some beautiful homespun wisdom, too. Then it’s time to mount up and hit the beach (or, from June, to September, the gorgeous national park just up the hill – don’t worry, you’ll still be able to swim in the sea!). Pine forests, sandy canters, lookouts, siestas… the day is yours to enjoy as you please.
-
Day 5: Lago dell’Accessa
5 to 8 hours in the saddleAvanti, Globetrotters, avanti! Onwards to another day in paradise! This morning you’ll be driven back to Tenuto Fontina to ride the horses home from Lago dell’Accessa along a totally different route, covering around 25 to 30 kilometres. This can be a fast-paced and thrilling ride of 5 to 6 hours, or a more leisurely ride of 7 to 8 hours, with another hilltop viewpoint, hammock siesta, and gluttonous picnic to break the day up. There’s a wonderful mix of open country, dense pine forest, technical riding, and freedom to pick up the pace and fly.
For dinner, a guest chef will drop in to dazzle you with her take on Tuscany’s magnificent cuisine.
-
Day 6: Vetalonia
5 to 6 hours in the saddleYour last riding day (sigh) brings the novel experience of riding the horses into town! Into a stunning medieval citadel, in fact. The hills around the ranch are littered with these honey-toned gems of history and architecture, including Vetalonia, a former Etruscan capital where you can see ancient ruins and even ride on a street paved 2,500 years ago; Tirli, with its stunning views over the Tuscan archipelago; and Caldana, home to Maremma’s oldest and most important medieval church. You’ll ride through dense and fragrant forests, over significant Etruscan ruins, through fields of wildflowers and olive groves, and clip-clop along ancient cobbled streets, stone staircases and narrow alleyways with flags and laundry fluttering in the breeze. You’ll feel like you’re in a costume drama: ‘Lower the drawbridge and sound the horns, the globetrotters have arrived!’
After a long table lunch in your chosen village, you’ll wind your way home via any number of scenic trails, taking as long as you please to return to the ranch.
Though dinner can be enjoyed in your apartment tonight, we recommend rallying the troops for a drive to a restaurant in town (dinner is included in the ride price, rest assured), for a taste of the nightlife in this gorgeous region.
-
Day 7: Departure
Non-riding dayAfter one final delicious breakfast, you’ll check out of your room by 10am, saying a fond farewell to this heavenly place and its delightful custodians.
-
Non-riders
This is the perfect ride for non-riders to join as there is so much for them to do and see in the area at their leisure. The hosts, Gio and Patrick, will be able to share their recommendations and offer suggestions as to how to fill each day – you can do as much or as little as you’d like!
Please note: Non-riders MUST have their own rental car. The farm is approximately 20mins from a local town so having your own transportation is essential.
Transfer information
For those coming from Europe or the UK, we recommend flying into Pisa, a 1.5-hour drive from your hosts’ ranch. For those coming from further afield, we recommend flying into Rome Fiumicino Airport, a 2.5-hour drive from the ranch.
Transfers to and from the ranch are not included in the ride price. We strongly recommend hiring a car and self-driving (this is essential for the Full Moon Trail) so that you can explore more of Tuscany in your free time. Alternatively, you can book transfers to and from the ranch with Transfer Toscana. There are also several local car rental companies who offer a delivery/pick up service to the ranch.
On the final morning, you’ll need to check out of your rooms by 10am, but you’re welcome to spend a leisurely morning at the ranch until 12 midday if you wish, so if you’re flying home this day, we suggest booking an evening flight.
Please note
If flying in on day 1, please ensure your flight arrives early enough to give yourself time to collect your luggage, clear customs and make your way to the ranch before the ride begins:
November through to mid-March: first ride at 2:30pm.
Late March to October: first ride at 4pm.
Accommodation
Three stylish, tasteful and luxurious apartments occupying a glorious traditional old Tuscan farmhouse. There is one three-bed, one two-bed, and one single bedroom apartment, all equally charming, and all studded with sumptuous furnishings and exceptional artwork. The apartments have their own kitchens, laundry facilities and rain showers, plus WiFi, a swimming pool, and a garden terrace for outside cocktails and entertaining. All of the beds are king sized, so please note twin share is not an option – if you share a room, you’ll share a bed!
Food
Food is a highlight of any Italian adventure and this ride absolutely delivers. Each day you’ll feast on fresh Tuscan produce — wild boar ragù, local cheeses, charcuterie, olives from the property, abundant salads and rustic pici pasta that clings to its sauce like a doting nonna. Local wines flow freely and whether you’re dining at the ride base or out in town, you’ll never go hungry in Italy. All meals are prepared by local community members — farmers, home cooks and those seeking extra income — a beautiful way your stay supports the families who call this region home. Please note: while gluten-intolerant guests will be accommodated where possible, we do not recommend this ride for coeliacs due to the high risk of cross-contamination — it is Italy, after all.

This was a fantastic experience. It is a wonderful and unique way to visit Tuscany; it allows you to see landscapes, terrain, villages, and people that would be impossible to appreciate in any other way. The hosts, guides, and horses were all top notch.

Gio is the consummate host. Being on the property for a week was like being at a wonderful country house get away with fabulous people, food, wine, horses, dogs. Gio thought of everything and works super hard to make sure all are taken care all while managing to make it look effortless. I’m a super fan girl!

‘Living la dolce vita under the Tuscan sun, surrounded by fabulous food, wine, and, did I mention, horses? The videos hardly do justice to the riding on the Tuscan Trail. We climbed straight up a hill to the medieval town of Vetulonia, enjoyed long, extended canters through olive groves and forests, and tackled a thrillingly steep downhill ride to the crystal-clear blue waters of the coast. Cantering along a deserted shoreline, splashing in the autumn sun and sparkling sea, honestly, life does not get much better than this!’

‘I don’t have enough superlatives to describe this ride. I’ll start with our hosts, Gio and Patrick. They ensured that everyone was well-housed and well-fed. We never lacked for conversation and laughed all week. Our guides, Ariana and Githe, were also amazing. They are outstanding horsewomen and clearly have a love for what they’re doing. Our accommodations were gorgeous. Every meal was delicious. The rides took us through beautiful countryside and along the sea. If you like these things, this is as close to a perfect vacation as you can get.’

‘My first Globetrotting experience was absolutely perfect. Gio and the staff provided a comfortable, fun and safe experience that left me wanting more! Every part of the holiday, from the riding, accommodation and meals to the table-side chats, was unforgettable. I highly recommend this ride. The hospitality was amazing and made everyone feel comfortable and welcome. Gio and the team topped off the experience by sharing history and stories from the surrounding communities. I rode Lady Ambra. She was a perfect fit for me. Her confidence, sure-footedness and personal flair were ideal for this type of ride. The guides and support staff were fantastic: fun, knowledgeable and always making sure everyone was comfortable and well taken care of. I couldn’t have asked for better service. Every ride was different and exciting, but my favourite part was riding to the surrounding communities. It could not have been a better experience.’

‘Gio Ranch was beyond amazing. Everyone there was so kind and helpful; it truly could not have been better. My daughter and I took part in the four-day riding programme and had an absolutely wonderful time. Every meal was a fantastic experience, and I had the pleasure of riding Dea, a calm yet spirited horse who responded beautifully when asked. Our guides were exceptional—kind, knowledgeable, and incredibly supportive throughout. All the people at Gio Ranch contributed to making this the most perfect holiday. We will definitely be returning.’
Sandy S
‘The Tuscany Ride was amazing, and our host, Gio, could not have done a better job. Every detail was taken care of. The food was amazing, as was the presentation, and our accommodations were outstanding. The horses were saddled for us each day, and all were very well behaved and trained. Every meal at the ranch was thoughtfully planned out. Our restaurant excursions and private luncheons on the ride were amazing. I rode Njoror, a 5-year-old gelding. He was super safe, strong, willing, and kind. When I return, I will ask for him again. The guides were extremely knowledgeable about the area, history, and riding abilities. Both were very friendly and fun! My favourite day was when we rode for about two hours up to an old Roman village and walked through the cobblestone streets while the large bell tolled at noon. This was the best Globetrotting experience yet!’

‘The Tuscany Ride is an incredible experience! The staff, horses, accommodation and food are all high quality. The ride itself was beautiful and immersed us in the land and the people. I highly recommend this adventure!’

‘Our group of friends, experienced horsewomen across several disciplines, anticipated a ‘head-to-tail’ trail ride through scenic Tuscany, but this was so much more! The horses were in great shape, safe, and well-suited to each rider and the tasks at hand. We enjoyed many trots, canters, and gallops on excellent footing, alongside walks through breathtaking countryside, ancient roads, and villages. There were enough challenging moments on the trails—spoken by an avid foxhunter—to keep it incredibly fun. I had to pinch myself several times a day to ensure I wasn’t dreaming! Our hosts, Patrick and Gio, were brilliant, going above and beyond on every detail. They could not do enough for our group; any need or issue was addressed immediately, and the days were impeccably organised. Patrick and Gio are sincere, charming, and wonderful people, making us feel cared for at all times. They affectionately called our group of girls ‘Princesses’ and truly made us feel that way. It was also lovely to see how well they treated their staff and cared for all the animals on the farm. House of Gio feels like one big happy family, which we certainly felt a part of during our stay. If this wasn’t enough, our apartments were absolutely breathtaking. At that point, you could have put me in a tent, and I would have been happy. An amazing experience beyond expectations—I would do it again in a heartbeat!’

‘I expected beautiful scenery, great horses, and amazing food in Tuscany, but what I didn’t expect was how special our hosts, Gio and Patrick, and their entire Globetrotting team would make us feel. Every detail reflected the care they put into creating a peaceful, welcoming environment—mini’s grazing on the lawn, friendly dogs always there to snuggle with, and the comfy, stylish Club House where we gathered before and after rides, and for many of our meals. Gio and Patrick made it a priority for us to truly experience the region, riding to and dining at local wineries, farms, and with artisans. Their commitment to supporting the local community made every stop along the way feel authentic and personal. Our guides were the perfect mix of sweet and sassy—knowledgeable, confident, and completely in tune with both the horses and the terrain. My horse, Priscilla, was a dream all week and has turned this warmblood owner into a devoted Haflinger fan. The rides, the horses, the food, the people, and the endless attention to detail all came together for an unforgettable Tuscan adventure shared with my closest friends—an experience we’ll cherish forever.’

‘If you’re looking for a perfect blend of comfortable off-the-horse experiences and thrilling on-the-horse experiences, then I’d recommend the full moon trail. The horses were incredibly well-trained and looked after, and the off-the-horse activities were super relaxing. Gio and his team have put so much effort into the whole experience, and it shows; I couldn’t have been happier. After spending my holidays for the last two years in Mongolia preparing for and doing the Derby, my rule was that my next ride would involve much more wine, cheese, and comfort, and this ride certainly delivered. Thank you to the Gio Ranch team!’
Lindsay T
‘A standout holiday experience with wonderful hosts, brilliant fellow riders, and scenery to die for! If you’re a solo rider, this is the ranch for you—a small group so you get to know everyone, with wonderful hosts making sure you have fun. The farmhouse is luxurious, the food is phenomenal, and there are plenty of sun-downer cocktails and good wine too. Overall, a trip that left me a more confident rider and fully relaxed, having had fun under the Tuscan sun!’

‘I had an incredible experience on the Tuscany Ride. From the moment we arrived, it felt like we were staying with an old friend or family member. Gio was informative, interesting, funny, and warm. What truly impressed me was how the Gio supports the local community, from the farmers and cheese makers to the vineyards. Most importantly, the care given to all the animals was outstanding. The condition of the horses and the tack matters greatly to me, as it enhances the enjoyment of a riding holiday. The animals truly come first. This was my fifth riding holiday but my first time with Globetrotting, and I was very impressed! A big five stars to everyone involved! I would book again in a heartbeat and wholeheartedly recommend you to my friends.’
Robyn W
‘I had the most memorable experience on the Tuscany Ride. This ride is not to be missed! Everything was perfect, from the accommodations to the horses to the food. It was just as much a culinary experience as it was an incredible riding experience. Our guides were absolutely wonderful—just a pleasure to spend time with as we rode through the breathtaking landscape of Tuscany. This was one of the best vacations I have ever been on, and I would do it again!’
Joanne J
‘The Tuscany Ride was positively magical! Absolutely amazing! 5 stars all the way! I was travelling on my own, but everything about getting there was easy, from being picked up at Grosseto train station by my transfer driver to arriving at the villa and being greeted by host Gio, the most charming and lovely person you could hope to meet. Gio cannot do enough for you and is such fun and great company. The apartment in the villa was the height of luxury with plenty of room for me and my new roomie/ride bestie, including a large bedroom and bathroom each and spacious shared living areas. The horses were fantastic, and I adored my sweet Paint mare Nyara, whom I rode every day. She was super sure-footed, had a chill temperament and was happy to be at the back or go forward, depending on what I wanted. The other five riders were fun and great company, too, and the staff at Gio Ranch were so helpful, making everything easy and a real pleasure. Then there were the after-ride cocktails and the amazing meals and wine, which included themed dinners and some of the best food I tasted in Italy! The whole atmosphere at the ranch was so warm and welcoming. I loved the dogs and the cats and Matilda the mini pony who went on one of the rides with us! Everything about this ride was exceptional, and I could go on and on about it. I will definitely be back!’
Anna A
‘The Tuscany ride was all about showing us a gorgeous slice of Italy: terrain, flora, food, history, beauty, all from horseback. I rode Lady Umbra, and we had an understanding within a day. She looked after me, scrambling surefootedly up and down rocky paths. Gio was so very informative, and was very generous in his support of all things local. Our hosts provided outstanding local Italian cuisine three times a day, always with wine, espresso, and several courses. The only thing better than the food was riding to the dining site, whether it be a mountain top restaurant in a medieval village, a farm deck overlooking olive groves, a forest picnic near the Mediterranean Sea, or a family run winery.’
Jo W
‘The experience you will have with Globetrotting will be unlike anything you have experienced before. On our ride, Jemma, one of the Globetrotting superstars, made sure we were happy with everything that we did (even making sure I had Coke Zero, since I didn’t drink – on a wine trip, I know!). But she didn’t need to worry at all, as Gio and the crew welcomed us into their homes and family, and now hold a special place in my heart. This trek was extremely luxurious, and I have never eaten so much food in my life. The horses were so well loved and cared for, looking after their riders. The pace catered for those of us who wanted to speed up a bit and also those who didn’t. Globetrotting really ensures they only use the hosts with the most! I won’t be using any other provider ever again!’

‘Staying at this beautiful ranch was an experience I’ll never forget! From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed by with such warmth and hospitality that we instantly felt at home. The kindness and genuine care shown by the whole team made our stay incredibly special. The horses were simply amazing – well-trained, gentle, and perfect for riders of any level. Exploring the scenic Tuscan trails on horseback was a dream come true, with breathtaking views that added to the magic of the experience. The food was exceptional! Every meal felt like a celebration of authentic Tuscan flavours, with fresh, local ingredients that showcased the best of Italian cuisine, and sent us home with a few extra pounds! Our apartment was decorated in a charming, cosy style that made it a perfect place to unwind. It was clear that a lot of care went into creating a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. Overall, the team gave us the warmest, most wonderful experience we could have hoped for. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to enjoy the beauty of Tuscany, with amazing food, great horses, and an unforgettable, heartfelt welcome. We will be back!’

‘My daughter and I have just returned from the awesome Tuscany ride. On arrival at the ranch, we were warmly welcomed by Gio and the family dogs, then taken to our accommodation in the idyllic traditional Tuscan farmhouse. Every day had something extraordinary to offer: rides to medieval hilltop villages, hacking through forests, vineyards, and olive groves, great races across open land, and gallops along the beach on our beautiful horses. The experience was way beyond our expectations, and Gio was just the perfect host; so gracious, and nothing was too much trouble for him. This is a trip I will never forget and would return again in a heartbeat. Don’t second guess this one – just go!’
